⛏️ Tether abandons Bitcoin mining project in Uruguay

Tether has abandoned a Bitcoin mining project in Uruguay following a contractual dispute with state electricity company UTE, according to Reuters. A source familiar with the agreement estimated the investment at around $120 million, a figure Tether had not made public.

The two sites, located in the department of Florida and operated by Tether's Uruguayan subsidiary Microfin, were disconnected by UTE after the dispute. The disagreement concerned the amount of electricity set out in the contract: Tether considered the agreed level a minimum threshold that could be expanded, while UTE treated it as a maximum cap. Two former contractors told Reuters that, as demand rose, the facilities sometimes lacked sufficient power for days.

The parties sought to agree on a revised contract, but Tether representatives did not attend the signing, accor...

🏛️ HMRC sends over 81,000 letters to digital asset holders

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sent more than 81,000 warning letters in the 2025/2026 tax year to British digital asset holders suspected of owing unpaid taxes. The number has tripled compared to the 27,714 letters sent in 2024.

The notices remind recipients that selling, gifting, exchanging or using digital assets for purchases may trigger capital gains tax. Failure to pay can result in a penalty of up to 100% of the tax owed, plus interest.

Neela Chauhan of UHY Hacker Young told the BBC that many young traders believe HMRC has limited visibility into their activities. According to the BBC, from next year new powers will require offshore digital asset companies to report client information to HMRC. The agency estimates the measure will generate £315 million by 2030.

🔒 Blockstream tests post-quantum signatures on four hardware wallets

On August 19, 2026, Blockstream published benchmarks on post-quantum signature generation across four hardware wallets: Jade Plus, Trezor Safe 3, Ledger Nano gen5/s+ and BitBox02 Nova. According to the group, all devices produced hash-based signatures in the implementations examined.

Five schemes were evaluated: SLH-DSA-128s, a reduced variant of SPHINCS+, UXMSS in the SHRINCS-L and SHRINCS-B configurations, and XMSS. The study measured signature generation on the device only, with results reported as averages over 100 runs. The research does not include post-quantum firmware verification and does not examine lattice-based or isogeny-based primitives.

For signature generation, SLH-DSA took between 52.85 and 120.12 seconds, while the SPHINCS+ variant took between 43.28 and 94.98 seconds. UXMSS SHRINCS-B, wit...

🔒 BitBox fixes two severe firmware vulnerabilities, funds are safe

The Dixence update brings the firmware to version 9.26.5 and closes two flaws that could have allowed arbitrary code execution or locked funds sent via Silent Payments. According to BitBox, there have been no reports of exploitation or stolen funds, and existing wallet seeds are not affected.

The first vulnerability is a memory corruption issue in the Multi edition, exploitable when no wallet has yet been set up and the device is connected to a malicious host. Successful exploitation could have allowed the installation of manipulated firmware and a potential loss of funds. The Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the affected code.

The second flaw concerns Silent Payments: a malicious host could have locked funds to an unintended address while a transaction was being created. BitBox rules out direct theft but describ...

🇷🇺 Binance shared a client's data with Russian authorities

Binance provided Russia's Investigative Committee with the transaction history and personal data of Yuri Belenkiy, an IT specialist detained in September 2025 and now awaiting trial in Russia on charges of "terrorism financing." Reuters reports this in an investigation based on law-enforcement documents it reviewed.

According to the documents, Russian authorities requested Belenkiy's transaction history from the exchange. Binance supplied information linking him to the transfers, along with his date of birth, address, phone number and passport number. The response also included copies of his Russian passport and Bulgarian residence permit.

The Investigative Committee accuses Belenkiy of sending over $700 in cryptocurrency between January 2023 and March 2024 to the Ukrainian military and to an organisation banned in Rus...

🏛️ Chainalysis sues US government over $95 million ICE contract awarded to TRM Labs

Chainalysis Government Solutions filed a complaint with the US Court of Federal Claims on 27 July 2026, challenging the decision by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to award TRM Labs a sole-source contract worth approximately $94.6 million for forensic software and investigative support services for Homeland Security Task Force operations.

According to court filings made public through CourtListener's RECAP archive, the contract runs for one year, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Chainalysis argued that ICE's decision was "arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable," noting that the company had submitted a capabilities statement in response to the agency's notice of intent to obtain the services from TRM Labs.

The complaint remains under seal because it contains co...

Bitcoin is approaching one of the most important Long Term Holder MVRV zones.

The Long Term Holder MVRV is currently around 1.28, moving significantly closer to the historical stress zone for long term investors.
This metric compares the market value of Bitcoin held by Long Term Holders with the average cost basis of those coins.

When LTH MVRV falls below 1, Long Term Holders are, on average, holding Bitcoin at an unrealized loss.
Historically, these conditions appeared around some of Bitcoin’s most important accumulation periods:
🔵 2012
🔵 2015
🔵 2018 and 2019
🔵 2022

Today, the metric stands at 1.28.
This does not yet represent the extreme capitulation observed near previous major cycle bottoms.
However, Bitcoin is moving closer to a region where historical risk and reward dynamics became increasingly asymmetric.
A deeper price correction could push LTH MVRV closer to, or even below, 1 again.

If that happens, the market would enter a zone historically associated much more with long term accumulation than distribution.
Short term volatility can remain high.

But from an on chain perspective, the Long Term Holder MVRV is becoming one of the most important Bitcoin metrics to watch over the coming months.
LTH MVRV: 1.28

🔒 Hack steals data of 700,000 French taxpayers

The French Ministry of Economy and Finance has confirmed that a cyberattack led to the access and extraction of tax data belonging to both individuals and professionals. The announcement came on Thursday 13 August, after a "malicious actor" claimed the day before to have breached the systems of the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) at the end of June.

Investigations confirmed the intrusion but remain ongoing to determine which data was accessed or taken and the exact number of taxpayers affected. The ministry stated it will publish further findings and that each affected individual will receive a personal notification detailing the data potentially exposed and, where necessary, the precautions to take.

Monitoring platform FrenchBreaches estimated nearly 700,000 taxpayers were involved, based on information attributed to those ...
