Immigrants make up the largest share of the population in over 150 years.
The rising proportion of immigrants is mainly driven by the record number of new migrants who came to Canada from 2016 to 2021. This is the largest proportion since Confederation.
The proportion of immigrants who first came to Canada temporarily on work or study permits or as asylum claimants before being admitted as permanent residents(Asia, Middle East and India being the highest)was especially high among recent immigrants who settled since 2016.
The share of recent immigrants from Europe continued to decline, falling from 61.6% in 1971 to 10.1% in 2021
Meanwhile, fertility rates have been steadily declining since 2009, with the trend intensifying since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
