Republican hold their national convention in July, while the DNC is holding their towards the end of August. Many states require official certification in order to be on the state ballots earlier than the DNC is holding their convention. The democrats are asking for the states to make an exception for them.

This is kind of an interesting twist of fate after so many blue states tried to get Trump off the ballot and now it's actually Joe who is at risk in a few states (Ohio, Alabama, Washington, and more) of not making it on the ballot due to state laws 🤣🪃🪃🪃
