📰This Black History Month, learn about the notorious Louisiana State Penitentiary, the site of centuries of Black struggle—first against slavery, then convict leasing, and now the US prison system, which some label as slavery in the modern day.
At the helm of the US’s notorious system of mass incarceration sits Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Apart from being the largest maximum-security prison in the United States, this prison, nicknamed “Angola” after the former plantation site that it sits on, is an example of the conditions of modern-day slavery that the US prison system inflicts upon its disproportionately Black incarcerated population.

🕊🕯11 year old Jocelynn Rojo Carranza, a 6th grade student at Gainesville Intermediate School, died by suicide after relentless bullying by her classmates who threatened to call ICE on her parents. Despite Jocelynn going to the counselors' office weekly and reporting the harassment to school authorities on multiple occasions, no action was taken. Her mother, Marbella Carranza was only informed about the bullying after her daughter’s death.

Jocelynn was failed by the school administration, which failed to support her against these racist attacks in school or even notify her parents that they were happening and by a billionaire-run social, political, and economic system that demonizes all immigrants and encourages racist fear-mongering at every turn.

We honor the memory of Jocelynn Rojo Carranza. Our task as organizers is clear: PROTECT MIGRANT CHILDREN! STOP MASS DEPORTATIONS! DEMAND ICE OUT OF OUR COMMUNITIES!

🗣While DEI initiatives have largely served as a band-aid solution to the deep wounds of institutional racism foundational to the US, Trump's attacks on DEI and affirmative action policies have signaled an all-out war on the Black working class.

This is a long term fight in the spirit of those who have fought before us, full of both victories and setbacks. But now more than ever, we must see our task as understanding the billionaire agenda at play set on overturning our rights for what it is, unite, and fight for a whole new system.
