The 1811 New Madrid earthquake series stands out as one of the most significant seismic events in North America, largely because it struck in an intraplate region, away from typical tectonic boundaries. This series of quakes began on December 16, 1811, with the first major shock hitting at around 2:15 a.m., followed by two more significant events in January and February 1812. These earthquakes were potentially as strong as magnitude 7.2 to 8.8, with the February 7, 1812, event being possibly the most powerful. Their effects were felt over an astonishingly large area, from Canada to the Gulf Coast, and even in distant cities like Boston and Charleston, South Carolina. The damage from these quakes extended over approximately 600,000 square kilometers, with the sensation of shaking perceived over 5 million square kilometers.

The physical landscape was dramatically altered by these events. Ground warping, uplift, and subsidence led to the creation or modification of numerous bodies of water, including the formation of Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee when the subsidence blocked the Mississippi River's flow. Other lakes, like St. Francis in Arkansas, were also significantly affected. The earthquakes caused extensive changes, with sand blows, fissures, landslides, and riverbank collapses creating a new topography. The Mississippi River itself was seen running backwards due to the seismic activity, leading to large waves and the destruction of riverbanks. Settlements such as New Madrid, Missouri, were obliterated, with homes, chimneys, and natural features like forests being devastated.

For Tecumseh and his confederation, the timing of these earthquakes was pivotal. Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader, was attempting to unify various Native American tribes against American expansion, and his brother, Tenskwatawa (The Prophet), had foretold significant natural events as signs. The New Madrid earthquakes were interpreted by many Native Americans as a fulfillment of these prophecies, significantly boosting Tecumseh's spiritual and political influence. Known as "Tecumseh's Comet" by some, the earthquakes were seen as divine signs supporting his call for unity and resistance.

The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773, late in the evening at Griffin's Wharf in Boston. This event was sparked by the British Parliament's Tea Act of 1773, which aimed to salvage the British East India Company by granting it a tea trade monopoly in America. The act was viewed by American colonists as an unjust tax without representation, intensifying their resentment. Three ships, the Dartmouth, Eleanor, and Beaver, arrived in Boston carrying tea, and the local colonial leaders, including members of the Sons of Liberty like Samuel Adams and John Hancock, were resolute in preventing the tea from being unloaded to avoid paying the tax. After weeks of failed negotiations and with the deadline for unloading the tea looming, the Sons of Liberty took decisive action. Disguised as Mohawk Indians to obscure their identities and symbolically distance themselves from British culture, the protesters boarded the ships late at night. They systematically broke open 342 chests of tea with axes and dumped approximately 92,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor, worth around £10,000 at the time, or about $1.7 million today. They were meticulous in ensuring they only destroyed the tea, avoiding any other damage or theft. The event concluded without violence or significant opposition from the ships' crews or British officials, who were largely powerless to intervene. The following day, news of the protest spread, with reactions ranging from outrage in Britain to celebrations across many American colonies. The Boston Tea Party significantly escalated tensions, leading to harsh British retaliatory measures known as the Coercive Acts, or Intolerable Acts, which in turn helped unite the colonies in opposition to British rule, paving the way for the American Revolutionary War.

In 1761, during the Seven Years' War, the Russian army under General Pyotr Rumyantsev began a four-month siege of the Prussian fortress of Kołobrzeg (German: Kolberg) starting in late August. The Russians employed a strategy of blockade, cutting off the fortress from receiving supplies or reinforcements by controlling both land and sea access. They subjected the city to heavy artillery bombardment, while sappers dug trenches to get closer to the walls for more effective attacks. Disease, particularly typhus, affected both sides, but the Russians managed to maintain their supply lines better than the Prussians, who were increasingly isolated. After months of siege, Rumyantsev's forces launched a decisive assault in early December, breaching the fortress defenses through intense fighting. On or around December 16, 1761, the fortress surrendered due to dwindling supplies, high casualties, and the inability to fend off further Russian attacks.

n 1620, Myles Standish led a group of 18 settlers from the Mayflower on an exploratory mission in Cape Cod, which led to the event known as the "First Encounter." This confrontation took place on December 8, when they met about 30 Native Americans, likely from the Nauset tribe, in what is now Eastham, Massachusetts. The settlers were looking for corn stores, water, and a suitable place for their new colony when they encountered the Nausets, who were already cautious due to past negative experiences with Europeans. The situation escalated quickly; arrows were exchanged for musket shots, with one settler being hit by an arrow but saved by his armor. No definitive records confirm casualties among the Nausets, though some were likely wounded or killed. After this brief skirmish, both groups retreated, the Nausets into the woods and the settlers back to their ship. This encounter established a wary tone for future interactions between the Pilgrims and local tribes, highlighting the complexities and initial conflicts of early colonial-Native American relations in New England. Despite this, relations with some tribes, particularly the Pokanoket, would later improve, leading to the more famous Thanksgiving celebration in 1621.

—❗️🇸🇾 BREAKING: Former President Bashar al-Assad has released his first statement

'As terrorism spread across Syria and ultimately reached Damascus on the evening of Saturday, 7th of December 2024, questions arose about the president's fate and whereabouts.

This occurred amidst a flood of misinformation and narratives far removed from the truth, aimed at recasting international terrorism as a liberation revolution for Syria.

At such a critical juncture in the nation's history, where truth must take precedence, it is essential to address these distortions. Unfortunately, the prevailing circumstances at the time, including a total communication blackout for security reasons, delayed the release of this statement. This does not replace a detailed account of the events that unfolded, which will be provided when the opportunity allows.

First, my departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles, as some have claimed. On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday 8th of December 2024. As terrorist forces infiltrated Damascus, I moved to Lattakia in coordination with our Russian allies to oversee combat operations.

Upon arrival at the Hmeimim airbase that morning, it became clear that our forces had completely withdrawn from all battle lines and that the last army positions had fallen. As the field situation in the area continued to deteriorate, the Russian military base itself came under intensified attack by drone strikes. With no viable means of leaving the base, Moscow requested that the base's command arrange an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday 8th of December.

This took place a day after the fall of Damascus, following the collapse of the last military positions and the resulting paralysis of all remaining state institutions. At no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party. The only course of action was to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught.

I reaffirm that the person who, from the very first day of the war, refused to barter the salvation of his nation for personal gain, or to compromise his people in exchange for numerous offers and enticements is the same person who stood alongside the officers and soldiers of the army on the front lines, just meters from terrorists in the most dangerous and intense battlefields. He is the same person who, during the darkest years of the war, did not leave but remained with his family alongside his people, confronting terrorism under bombardment and the recurring threats of terrorist incursions into the capital over fourteen years of war.

Furthermore, the person who has never abandoned the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, nor betrayed his allies who stood by him, cannot possibly be the same person who would forsake his own people or betray the army and nation to which he belongs.

I have never sought positions for personal gain but have always considered myself as a custodian of a national project, supported by the faith of the Syrian people, who believed in its vision. I have carried an unwavering conviction in their will and ability to protect the state, defend its institutions, and uphold their choices to the very last moment.

When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose, rendering its occupation meaningless.

This does not, in any way, diminish my profound sense of belonging to Syria and her people - a bond that remains unshaken by any position or circumstance. It is a belonging filled with hope that Syria will once again be free and independent.'

The Wall Street Journal has reported that a Chinese ship suspected of damaging telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea acted under orders from Russian intelligence.

The telecommunications cable was damaged on 18 November 2024 after the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3 passed over it. Finland, Germany, Sweden, and Lithuania reported the damage.

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources involved in the investigation, said Russian intelligence instructed the ship’s captain to damage the cables with the ship’s anchor.

The vessel and its crew were later detained by the Royal Danish Navy for questioning and a detailed review of its course and actions near the telecommunications cables. Reports identified the ship’s captain as Russian citizen Alexander Stechentsev.

Ahead of the suspected attack, the Russian Black Sea Fleet corvette Merkury arrived in the Kattegat area to conduct reconnaissance for the Yi Peng 3, relaying classified information to headquarters in Kaliningrad.
