Unless you’ve run before, you can never truly understand what it means to run a kilometer. Trust me, no corridor video, no perspective visualization will do it. It’s like those facts about how vast the universe is (maybe an exaggeration but not really). You just can’t fully grasp it, can’t put it into perspective. You can try, but I don’t think you can truly understand it.

I ran with poor training (circumstances), bad gear (poor decision), and a bleeding nose (unfortunate). But I didn’t stop for a single second, and that’s the bar I set for myself. And still, I managed to get a personal best. The hardest thing I’ve ever done and the proudest I’ve ever been.

Perspective | Having a Good Environment (Oneself)

Studies suggest that around 80% of our thoughts are negative, and 95% are repetitive. This means most people dwell on the same negative thoughts every day. Having a good environment within yourself means having that many of your thoughts be pleasant.

Being in a place where you see how things could be better and knowing full well what that would mean is frustrating. Bad decisions, ignorance, and inefficiency stand out to the point where you start to appreciate the progress our species has made (maybe an exaggeration but still).

Especially while running, when you’re not with anyone, not talking, and not doing anything to distract yourself, you’re alone with your mind, with the pain. In those moments, it’s important to be a positive force in your own experience, to be a supporter, someone who wants the best for you and contributes to your success. And I was!

Running

Whenever you start something new, it’s not fun. It almost never feels enjoyable, even games can be hard to learn at first. This is especially true for physical activities like running. After your first run, you start questioning why you're doing this. You're sore, your legs hurt, and you just don’t want to be there. But after a while you start to enjoy it, you miss it when you don’t do it, and eventually, it becomes a hobby.

Now, after all these runs, I can say I can run 5KM enjoyably. I miss it when I don’t, and I’ll most likely never stop running. But running long distances is different. It has never felt the same. You’re out there, feeling pain everywhere, your mind constantly racing with thoughts, making you feel like you’re going crazy. You want nothing but to stop, yet after running 16 kilometers, you still have 5 left. (how that feels)

Running Half Marathon| 2025 Lake Side Hawassa Half Marathon | Great Ethiopian Run

I may not have seen many organizations in Ethiopia, but I’ve seen enough to understand how they function and how things get done. We all know how hard it is to make something happen, especially in a government organization. But my experience with the Great Ethiopian Run has been different.

I've been part of a couple of events, and each time, the way things are done has been predictable (in a good way). organization, events run on time, and there’s genuine care put into every detail. That could be attributed to them being an international organization rather than a local one and having many foreign members.

Knowing even a small detail can make a huge difference, and these things compound over time. There’s a reason we are taught the fundamentals and spend so much time understanding them. As cliché as it sounds, you truly need a strong foundation to build a solid house.

There are no shortcuts to understanding, you have to put in the effort and time. While AI tools have made things easier, they’ve also made cheating easier, creating the illusion of learning when, in reality, you’re just copy pasting.

It’s important to make a conscious effort to assess where you truly stand in a field or topic, honestly and objectively, before reaching a point where even your own judgment can't be trusted.

And who are you really fooling then? And who do you trust?

Presentation | Sunday 12:00 PM (48hrs)

There were about 12 games, most built using engines like Godot and Unity. We showcased what we had built and walked through the process of how we did it. 🦸 It felt like I was defending JavaScript out there. It was an amazing experience, one that I would recommend to anyone interested in game development, collaborating, and networking. I would definitely attend the next one!

Saturday (12hrs)

By midday, I had already finished the core part of the game. Players could join a game, wait for an opponent, get paired, and if one resigned, the other would be notified that their partner left. At some point, my partners were leaving me too much due to a bug while working on that area. (I didn’t even have a partner 😄).

No styling yet, just a default HTML button. At this point, I was pretty confident I would have at least a somewhat working game by the end of the day. In the afternoon, I started adding some UI, sharing numbers between players, and handling different button states like joining, resigning, waiting, and input states, along with basic rules like preventing a player from submitting a guess when it was not their turn. Half of Saturday was spent finishing tasks from my actual job, so time was tight.

Final Day | Sunday (36hrs)

By midday on Sunday, the game was playable within the time constraints, and I added some UX touches like showing which player you are, timing animations for each player, and things like that. The final touch was adding sound and displaying how many users were online. I also hosted it, so the game was playable online, and then I was done.

We played with friends from another team (on the local network), and watching them actually play and interact with the game was 🎊. It was tough not to ALT + Tab and check their numbers on my console.

Building | Friday 6:00 PM (6hrs, Midnight)

My game is called ATP or as you might know it, Number Order. Two players try to guess each other’s 4-digit numbers, and the first player to guess correctly wins. After each guess, your opponent tells you how many digits you got right (Number) and how many of those are in the correct position (Order).

My main goal was to make the game playable in multiplayer, but my mind started wandering to other ideas like building a neural net to learn the game and play against people. I even thought about making the multiplayer mode analyze games for players or rate their guesses. It would’ve been cool, but there wasn’t nearly enough time to figure out how I’d even calculate the error 😄. Before sleeping, I looked into a few things, set up the environment, and called it a day.
