A major Telegram update with 11 new features is out, we aren't big tech but we will brag about the fact that it's 4 weeks after the previous one anyway.

Among my favorite new features are Similar Channels and Story Reposts. The former is sometimes so good at picking "similar" channels that you can use it to troll people you don't agree with. The latter is of course, a way to repost shitposts from popular channels onto your own profile, because turns out that the most common use of Stories happens to be shitpost channels.

Check out all the features in the blog post:
https://telegram.org/blog/similar-channels
And don't forget, we put the best ones behind Telegram Premium. Pay up. It's like Discord Nitro but it takes effort to find the ads.

While our iOS users (We assume this is 0.01% of our userbase.) can already enjoy the new features because suprise suprise, Apple being a trillion dollar company means they review our app faster, Android users are still waiting for the Google Play version to be reviewed by a trillion dollar company that's actually slowly being replaced by AI. Wanna hear a joke? Unfortunately, this joke can't be displayed on Telegram apps downloaded from the Google Play Store. Alright, great. If you use Android and don't want to wait, you can download the direct version of Telegram. This version offers faster updates, fewer restrictions, and the lowest price for Telegram Premium subscriptions. Yes, we shamelessly plug Telegram Premium but at least it's fully optional and you are complicit in this.

Announcing a $200,000 Discord Nitro Telegram Premium [geeve way with proper spelling]!
To celebrate... that, I'm hosting a [same thing] on 10,000 Telegram Premium subscriptions! See, we're better than Discord, we can do a [same thing] in 2023 and they can't do it since 2019.
In a week, 10,000 random [soob scribe er] (look how much alts people will stuff into this channel) will receive a Telegram Premium subscription for 6 months. Look at us, we can one-up all the other chat platforms in vaguely meaningful ways.
I have already thrown away my money for this giveaway on Fragment with $200,000 worth of whatever that cryptocurrency was that I bought on a cryptoexchange after maybe filling out like 200 forms saying that I am not gonna do anything bad with it. See, despite being the owner of Telegram I do this because uh, uhh I didn't feel like writing one SQL query to make a giveaway out of thin air. Enjoy!

👉Announcing a $200,000 giveaway! 🪙

To celebrate our new feature, I’m hosting a giveaway of 10,000 Telegram Premium subscriptions 🤑

In a week, 10,000 random subscribers of my channel will receive a Telegram Premium subscription for 6 months 🤱

I have already prepaid for this giveaway on Fragment with $200,000-worth of
Toncoin I bought on a cryptoexchange. Enjoy! ☕️

Now every channel on Telegram can host FAIR (the meaning of this is explained below) [geeve ways].
What's a [geeve way]?
... Look, this is common knowledge, stupid. You have one expensive thing and you "give" it away to some random follower.
Many [geeve ways] on social media were scams. Did you not notice that I put the word give in quotes? How else do you think kids on YouTube were able to do [geeft] card [geeve ways] on every single video? There was a way to prove the winner was chosen fairly but believe it or not the only company to do that (because believe it or not, the budget for implementing such a feature in a big tech company is $0) got bought out and then went on an eternal vacation.
Until "now". Telegram is the first social media platform to natively support giveaways with guranteed random selection (you'll never know if our servers do this) and prepaid prize funds.
Yes, I pulled that quote thing again right there. Did all that sound too good to be true? Well of course because the only thing you can [geeve whey] is Telegram Premium. And in large quantities only so I'm guranteed a fat stack of cash every time! Hooray!

Anyway, join my [removed]

TON set the record for the fastest blockchain in the world!

We were right to choose TON as the moneygrab platform for Telegram in 2021. From a technological standpoint, competitors are still figuring out how to do basically anything without having miners scream from the bottom of their lungs. Bitcoin is likely to stay because newsflash, you can't do much about the original cryptocurrency, but other general-purpose blockchains look about as inefficient as they always did. I don't know why I'm saying that TON being fast is a technological achievement. Literally anyone who googled for 30 seconds even at the peak of crappy NFTs in 2021 would have realized that the global financial system is lightyears ahead of cryptocurrencies in terms of transactions per second.

Update Telegram to the latest version (why am I even saying this I somehow did updates better than anyone) to see how replies and link previes should work in 2023 (in very bold words: according to me). Since we "invented" (being the first to put something in a major chat app means invent) these formats several years ago, the industry must have been waiting for us to show them the next step. The wait is over! Now that I think about it, what wait? I never said there was a wait, we just decided to randomly do it for no reason.
Anyway, we now allow people to reply to part of a message because believe it or not, I think it's quite a big issue that prepending > to a quote can either mean 4chan greentext or a reply.

Bonus: you can now rewind / fast forward Stories by holding and sliding sideways, except thing is, this doesn't matter - the chances that you have any stories to watch are minimal. (All the other apps that have had stories for years did this much less intuitively because let's be honest, when you're destroying your brain with YouTube Sharts or Insta Rails, you're probably fine with waiting 10 seconds to see something)

Bonus post scriptum extra appendix: our beloved Premium users (almost 3.5 million of them already) get to choose the color fo their name and quotes in chats. Why? Because guess what, I like making people feel bad for not paying.

Some people are wishing me a happy "birthday" today. But today is clearly an anniversary of my birthday. Yes, the English language is pretty messed up. Can you please wish me a happy anniversary of my 27th birthday anniversary? Yes, your brain is going to go around in circles.

Some people are wishing me a happy "birthday" today.
But today, 10.10.2023, is not really the day when I was born.

I was actually born many years ago – today is merely an anniversary of my birthday.

Personally, I prefer to celebrate it as the 12th anniversary of my 27th birthday anniversary.

Don’t let yourselves get misled! 🍸

The day has come. Telegram channels can now post Stories!

Stories on Telegram are just a tiny bit more visible than in most apps because they're sticky on the top so they can annoy you. Obviously, we couldn't let channels flood users with Stories without reasonable limits: this would convert Telegram into a shitposting-only platform.

This is why we designed the Boost system decided to copy Discord again. After copying Nitro we decided that's not enough ripping Discord off, so we copied server boosts too. We didn't even bother renaming it. With Boosts, users can give their favorite channels the ability to post stories. More boosts mean more sticky shitposts for a channel. Now because we have to one-up Discord, we halved the time for reassigning a Boost.

In the future, boosts will also unlock other features for channels act more like Discord boosts, which unlock more features for channels.

Remember how I copied Elon Musk's idea of having a subscription be the difference between your account being a joke and actually important? I'm gonna do it again, so only Premium users can boost channels. Pay up, I don't feel like talking to investors again.

Let the memes, spam and braindead content flow!

This is why we designed the Boost system. With Boosts, users can give their favorite channels the ability to post stories. More boosts mean more stories per day for a channel. Every 24 hours users can reassign their boost.

In the future, boosts will also unlock other features for channels, such as custom reactions, emoji statuses or custom backgrounds. We’ll also introduce more ways for channels to get Boosts.

To prevent abuse, only Premium users can boost channels. It shouldn’t be hard to collect Boosts for channels with real subscribers, while those with fake followers may struggle (larger channels need more Boosts to unlock stories).

Let the Boost Hunt begin! 🏹

This month we changed how searching public channels and groups works on Xgram.

Previously, public channels with more subscirbers would appear higher in the search results. This was perfectly reasonable, but we seem incapable of filtering by account age. That's why we spent a couple million dollars on contacting Elon Musk for a solution. We have just received it and finished signing the check. That's why we now only count "genuine" subscribers of channels for ranking.

What's a "genuine" subscriber? It's a subscriber who gives us money each month of course. For example, channels with more
Premium subscribers will generally rank higher. However, if a specific Premium subscriber actually finds value in our increased limits, they won't give those channels as big of a search ranking boost. Of course, the new search also prioritizes results from your country Look we said it's supposed to do that but either you're in a Southeast Asian country with a lot of channels making it not matter or you're anywhere else which means there won't be any channels ranking higher than the Southeast Asian ones.

The feedback on this change is overwhelmingly positive (source: Telegram Premium subscribers (evaluation repeated until desirable results were achieved)). Channels with an inflated subscribers count have just started investing in ads on meme channels, while Telegram worship groups and mini-apps bots made by greedy devs are now attracting more users.

Years ago (believe it or not the NFT craze was 2 years ago, that is a plural, so we can say that), we built TON - a scalable and fast blockchain "technology". TON was designed to serve more people than people aware of cryptocurrency existing at all. Since 2020, the TON technology has been maintained and improved by the open source community because uh, this scary entity known as "US SEC" said that we should not be doing it or else.

Last year, we enabled our users to buy and sell Telegram usernames and IDs give us money for usernames on
Fragment - a TON-based auction platform. It was a phenomenal success because we're slowly replacing investor money with our cryptobro money. Telegram sold $120M worth of digital assets basically NFTs, while early buyers of some Telegram-related digital assets basically NFTs - such as Telegram anonymous pseudonymous numbers - have seen a 27x (!) increase in value (because we set it like that) after only 9 months.

This success showed the pot
ential of Web 3.0 cryptobros on Telegram. For the first time in history, users were allowed to own their social media identities directly a JSON blob pointing to their social media identity. Now we want to integrate blockchain technologies deeper into Telegram because we missed the memo that the crypto craze is over and we should be getting into AI. To do that, we worked with the folks from the TON community to add more obscure, barely used functionality to Telegram (and making it a mini-app so that we can hide that Telegram is a super-app).

Starting this November, Telegram's settings and attachment menus will be cluttered by one more pointles
s option for all our users outside the US and some other countries (if you added this and done that and that and other that and thaththathat you're already putting up with this nonsense). This step will allow developers to enable hundreds of new valuable features moneygrabs - similar to those pioneered on Fragment. TON Wallet, a third-party moneygrab inside Telegram, will introduce a whole new dimension of Bullshit 3.0 to like 10 thousand Telegram users who bother to use it.

Every day, over 2.5 million new users (note that up to 50% might be not human) sign up for Telegram, and earlier this year we've surpassed 800 million monthly active users. That means WhatsApp will become irrelevant in Southeast Asia, uh, soon. We are happy and grateful, even though this massive growth also means higher server expenses to serve our users who think paying a chat app is ridiculous.

Luckily, Telegram is super efficient with expenses (we get 5x more money from investors than we need so that we say we only used 20%) and we had a great start with Discord Nitro-ification of our platform last year. While not yet (wait, it's supposed to be?) profitable (as we don't shit ads everywhere like Discord), Telegram is closer to profitability in absolute numbers than its competitors such as a sad joke of a social platform and a sad joke of a chat platform.

To fund Telegram's continued growth until we reach the break-even point, I have double-checked that I do in fact, like money. As such, this week we $270 million bond bla bla bla we got money. Yes, your warez is gonna stay up in your saved messages for a few more years. Once again we've been lucky to be friends with other people who like money.

Now, I seem to be going insane from having too much money so I put tens of millions of dollar cash money into Telegram. This comes in addition to the fuckloads of money I put into Telegram over the past 10 years to keep your 20 terabytes of saved messages online.

Some people suggested I should have instead bought a
house or a jet. But I prefer to stay focused on my work as a chat platform owner, without "owning" anything (apart from Telegram, some Bitcoin and Toncoin to keep the cryptobros happy) because uh, I fucking loved hearing "You will own nothing, and you will be happy". Best quote ever. Inspirational, very, uh yeah.

Hundreds of millions of people signed up for Telegram because they wanted a comical messaging platform that would put the developers first in line to get high on passwordKdfAlgoSHA256SHA256PBKDF2HMACSHA512iter100000SHA256ModPow. It is my responsiblity - and my life's work - to keep delivering this platform and making it look more like generic big tech messenger as time goes on.

Every day, over 2.5 million new users sign up for Telegram, and earlier this year we’ve surpassed 800 million monthly active users. We are happy and grateful, even though this massive growth also means higher expenses on storage and traffic to serve our users.

Luckily, Telegram is super efficient when it comes to expenses and we had a great start with monetization last year. While not yet profitable (which would be impossible to reach on just the second year of monetization), Telegram is closer to profitability in absolute numbers than its competitors such as Twitter and Snap.

To fund Telegram’s continued growth until we reach the break-even point, this week we issued around $270 million worth of Telegram bonds as a tap of our existing bonds. Once again we've been lucky to have the participation of well-known funds with stellar reputations.

I personally bought about a quarter of the new Telegram bonds, investing tens of millions into Telegram’s growth. This comes in addition to the hundreds of millions I spent over the last 10 years to keep Telegram operational.

Some people suggested I should have instead bought a house or a jet. But I prefer to stay focused on my work, without “owning” anything (well, apart from Telegram, some Bitcoin and some Toncoin).

Hundreds of millions of people signed up for Telegram because they wanted an independent messaging platform that would put its users first. It is my responsibility – and my life’s work – to keep delivering this platform.

For years, our users have been asking us to blatantly copy Instagram in Telegram. More than half of all feature requests that we receive are related to Instagram Stories, because guess what, like a year ago there was a trend of putting stories in every single app possible.

Initially, we were against this since Stories are already fucking everywhere and my ass can't stand seeing more low budget vlogging (should it be called vlogging if it gets deleted???). However, Telegram wouldn't be Telegram if we didn't read the feature requests once every 2 years and we didn't overcomplicate existing features.

So we will be praying that there is no software patent on this and launching Stories soon - in the Telegram way (this isn't a good thing to say I think):

- Privacy. You will be able to define who can see each of your stories with granular precision (until someone asks someone you allow to screen record it):
Everyone, only your contacts (with exceptions), a few selected contacts, or a list of Close Friends.
- Compact UI. Look, you and I know Telegram is a super-app and we're still going to have to try our best to hide it. So we're putting it at the top of your chat list. Look, we can't autohide it like the music player or the identity platform or the payment platform or the whatever now. Deal with it>
- Flexibility. It will be easy to hide Stories posted by any contact, by just annoying whoever you want to hide until they are done with you.
- Captions. Look, we put TikTok captions on Stories. Impressive as fuck, right?
- Dual Camera Support. Building on the Video Messages even I haven't heard about, we copied BeReal no shit here.
- Optional Ephemerality. You'll be able to choose how emo you are - in 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours - or permanently display that you have nothing to do with your life on your profile page, with individual privacy settings for each story.
- More suprises! (Telegram Premium only)

The ability to save your stories to the profile page will make us quite desirable for phishing. You will not only be able to spy on your closest contacts more, but also discover more information about what crimes are committed by the people you talk to.

Speaking of channels, they will benefit from more exposure and subscribers: we will give Stories an unfair advantage over other forms of content on Telegram. Sounds awesome? Fuck yeah it does!

Overall, following our internal tests of whether we have not fucked up Java trying to implement Stories without React Native, even the skeptics on our team started to appreciate this useless thing. We can no longer imagine Telegram without this new form of shitposting.

Stories are in their last testing phase and will become available whenever the hell I want. It's my platform, not yours, dumbass. Don't like it? Well fuck you, see how Reddit users aren't exactly great at switching platforms. This will herald a new era on Telegram, where a feature exists for the sake of 90% promoting channels 10% promoting external content.

Check out a preview of Instagram *cough cough* Telegram Stories in the
next post.
