During this World Wetlands Day, we celebrate all that our shores, marshes, and swamps do for us and the environment. These rich ecosystems support some of the most diverse plant and animal life in our country, including large flocks of endemic and migratory birds. In celebrating this occasion, we should also be cognizant of the threats these important ecosystems face such as the ever increasing water hyacinth invasion, and vow to do all that we can to protect and conserve our wetlands.

Originating in the mountains of Southwestern Oromia, the mighty Awash is the lifeblood of the Great Rift Valley region. A subject of Oromo poetry and music from the likes of Laureate Tsegaye Gebremedhin Qawessa and Dr. Ali Birra, Awash is a river of myths, legends, and tales by the Oromo since time immemorial.

The Afar-bound river zigzags its way up East Shoa, wetting the Awash National Park and irrigating citrus farms. It is here, past the lush Merti farms and the pretty Lake Basaka, that the Awash performs it most dramatic farewell to Oromia at the expansive Awash Falls. The falls extend over a long stretch of rapids and small river islands before cascading over massive boulders into a hundred small and big drops. The water foams and roars in a glorious display of the power of Awash that you can view and feel from a conveniently perched lodge nearby.

The Abijata-Shalla Lakes National Park hosts a flock of Ostriches that wander into the backyards of residents there every now and then. The tall birds have created a reasonably stable relationship with the human population there. This makes it easier to get close to them and marvel at how unbelievably large these flightless avians are since they’re usually not bothered by the presence of people. Pitch black feathers interspersed by white ones cover the male ones, while the females are grayish in color. These ones are not as striking, but definitely telling of their more modest avian roots including the fact that they lay the largest eggs in the world which you’ll get to see at the little reception building of the park where a couple of these giant cells are displayed.
