Just musing in strategic political terms: How does one actually get Trump - a total imbecile and climate denier - to *not* completely fuck the climate over?
Is it even possible? I don’t know. But I think it’s worth thinking of this strategically, from both domestic and international policy standpoints separately:
Internationally, Trump is a neo-Mercantilist who sees trade as a zero-sum game. And he absolutely abhors the idea of “losing”, especially to China. Maybe, just maybe, if a picture can be painted in his head of China winning in the global clean tech market, and/or American goods/brands losing global market share within various clean tech sectors, Trump could be motivated to mobilize the domestic productive forces to catch up?
In domestic terms, a first step is protecting the progress made on the IRA and ensuring it doesn’t get dismantled. A lot of the clean electricity standard plan revolves around tax credits. Maybe, just maybe, if a picture can be painted in his mind that these are “corporate tax breaks”, maybe he won’t cancel them🤷🏻♂️
I dunno, just spitballin’ here
