Did you know that it was Roman Emperor Hadrian who created Palestine?
Roman Emperor Hadrian renamed Judea as “Syria Palaestina” in 135 CE, after the defeat of the Bar Kokhba uprising.
It’s essential to note that the name “Palestine” was not used to refer to a distinct Arab or Palestinian people at that time. Instead, it was a Roman administrative designation for the region, which encompassed a broader geographic area than the modern-day State of Palestine.
The term “Palestine” was derived from the Greek name “Palaistinē”, which was itself a corruption of the Hebrew name “Philistia”, referring to the ancient Philistine confederacy.
The Roman Empire adopted this name, and Hadrian used it to rename Judea, effectively erasing the Jewish connection to the land.
Over time, the name “Palestine” would be adopted and reinterpreted by various groups, including Christian and Arab populations, to refer to the region.
However, in its original Roman context, “Syria Palaestina” was a geographical designation rather than an ethnic or national identity.
