The White House has revoked access to CNN, MS NOW and Politico, and all five major television networks, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox, have responded by suspending their participation in the presidential press pool.
This is being presented as a defence of press freedom, but it looks far more like a coordinated attempt to protect the legacy media’s monopoly over presidential coverage.
For decades, the pool system has allowed a small group of media organisations to decide what the public sees, how it is framed and which parts of the story are amplified or buried. Now the White House is demonstrating that a president can bypass that system entirely, speaking directly through independent media, online broadcasts and platforms such as X.
After years of collapsing ratings and public distrust, exclusive access to the presidency is one of the last things keeping these networks relevant. If that access is no longer necessary, they lose both their influence and their ability to control the narrative.
