Ahlul Ḥadīth Wal Athar

As for the teachers, they taught in Dammaj for the sake of Allah the mighty and majestic. There were no salaries or special funds allocated to them in exclusion to the rest of the students, and Allah placed blessings in their knowledge. Today, however, Abdullah bin Mar’i announces a call for support for the teachers and opened accounts and groups to receive donations. All of this is nothing but thievery. Why doesn’t Abdullah bin Mar’i spend from the millions of Saudi Riyals now in his account, which he earned through real estate, instead of begging, humiliating the faces, and dishonoring the Da'wah and knowledge but we know him to be well-known for his love of wealth and lusting after the Dunyaa.

And do not think we envy them for collecting wealth and begging. The members of these organisations accused Shaykh Muqbil of envying them. He responded by saying:

“The bankrupt Muslim Brotherhood cannot be trusted, nor can the members of Al-Hikmah organisation, Al-Ihsaan organisation, or Al-Islaah organisation, be trusted. It is obligatory upon them to fear Allah, the exalted and the most high. And we do not envy them, nor do we compete with them for these funds. However, the merchants who do not use their wealth wisely will be questioned before Allah on the Day of Judgment if they spend it on other than their correct avenues.

Indeed, someone who still remains with the Muslim Brotherhood said it well: “We can argue and misspresent everything against the people of Sunnah on many issues, except these towering buildings but we cannot cover these and say they didn't build buildings, by Allah we don't know how to defend this!”.

Our Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, also said in his treatise “Compassion for the Disobedient Student”:
“By Allah, O Abdullah bin Ghaalib, do we envy you for sleeping under a blanket in the library while others are researching, and you are wrapped in your blanket? Do we envy you, my son, for wasting time traveling from Dammaj to Sana’a, to Taiz, to Jeddah, to Qasseem, to Riyadh, to Al-Ahsaa, and to many other places? This, my son, is not something you are envied for. What should we envy you for?”. End of speech.

Congratulations to those who are content and satisfied with the goodness that our Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, was upon. Allah placed blessings in his Da'wah despite the cramped accommodations and the large number of students who came to him.

Glory be to You, and praise be to You. There's no deity worthy of worship in truth except You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.

Shingaani.

His Masjid was small, unable to accommodate the students. It had no grand building, and we used to pray in the street. Then we moved to the new basement, which became crowded. Then to the floor above it, which also became crowded. He passed away while we were still there, and he never requested any donations. He passed away honorable and noble.

We used an electric generator for only a few hours due to financial constraints, and for the remaining hours, we used a gas lamp placed in the Masjid and the dormitories. One day, the gas lamp nearly exploded during a lesson between Maghrib and Ishaa, but Allah protected us. Despite this, Shaykh Muqbil continued his lesson without ever announcing a request for support from the merchants—never, by Allah.

The dormitories for single students were so cramped that some had to build small, narrow rooms from mud and clay, roofed from wood from the acacia tree and tarpaulins. The doors of these rooms were below ground level, so when it rained, water would enter, and some rooms would collapse. And Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, did not cease to receive students without pausing accepting them to gather donations, as others do now in Al-Fiyuush.

The accommodations for those married were also cramped, made of mud bricks, and some were repurposed from chicken farms. During his lifetime, they were so crowded that more than one family would share a house. Some would move from one house to another, and I myself moved to five different houses whenever a brother traveled. After Shaykh Muqbil’s death, the original people of Dammaj began to make their land available, yet the overcrowding persisted. This is known to everyone who lived in Dammaj from those that now engage in worldly pursuits and begging in the name of knowledge to expand Al-Fiyuush.

As for the sewage system and toilets, they were among the most challenging issues we faced. The sewers were uncovered, and the few toilets were overcrowded. Often, they became clogged and overflowed into the streets. The toilet bowls were merely cement basins or cut oil drums. Unlike the marble basins and toilets now seen, Shaykh Muqbil never announced a request for help. Later, the toilets were expanded.

During the life of our Sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, I do not think there were more than twenty toilets, and they became overcrowded for us.

Today, we hear of those opening of accounts and collecting donations for the sewage system, and those managing these collections are the Shaykhs of Al-Fiyuush. What a pity for this knowledge you learned in Dammaj.

As for the food and living conditions in Dammaj during the life of our Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, it was a life filled with blessings from Allah. We did not disdain it; rather, it was a blessing that required gratitude. I am merely describing the conditions we experienced. I lived as a single student in Dammaj during the life of our Shaykh Muqbil for nearly four years, and I do not recall ever seeing fish, tuna, or chicken on top of the rice except if it was on rare occasions which I can't even remember. During Ramadan, they would bring us some chicken—one or three-fourths of one—for ten people. The rice was large-grained yellow rice, which we called American or Vietnamese rice. We did not cook the fancy rice of today. Some study circles would even lack food for lunch or breakfast, and they would endure until the next meal because there were no restaurants to assist them.

This was in the late 1990s, around 1417 AH. How about those who were there more than ten years before us?

Our Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, had abstinence, was patient, and grateful for these blessings. He never requested donations or defiled the Da'wah with begging. He honored it with 'Iffa (abstinence), so Allah honored him.

📚MY ADVICE to those who collect donations in the name of spreading knowledge

“There is much evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah on the blameworthiness begging and encouraging 'Iffa (abstinence). For those who seek more information, refer to the treatise of our Sheikh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, titled ⤵️
(The blameworthiness of Begging).

We only aim to summarize some of Shaykh Muqbil’s words so that the unbiased may understand how the Da'wah of our Shaykh Muqbil was, and who are those that are steadfast on what he used to be upon before.

Our Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
“Then Aqeel Al-Maqtari comes and says: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I and the one who sponsors an orphan are like this”. And Muhammad Al-Mahdi comes and says: “Allah the most high says:

(وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ)
"And whatever good you put forward for yourselves -  you will find it with Allah"
[Al-Muzzammil:20]

And look at the begging magazine “Al-Furqan Magazine”; do you find an edition without begging therein? I advise the people of Sunnah to fulfill their duty toward the Da'wah for the sake of Allah the mighty and majestic. We are not calling people to take their wealth. Even if you travel to any Islamic country, you will not find a Sunni who preaches to people, admonishes them to tears, and then spreads out his turban at the door (i.e in order to be given money)”.

He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:
“The matter is materialistic. The people of the Al-Hikmah organisation and Al-Ihsaan organisation—most of them studied with us and know what we are upon. So why did they deviate? They could not endure the hardships that the students of knowledge here endured, nor what our brothers in Adan endured. Instead, they run frantically from Taiz, Ibb, and Sana’a to Qatar and the land of the Haramain (Saudi Arabia), saying: “I and the one who sponsors an orphan are like this”. And they also say:

(وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ)
"And whatever good you put forward for yourselves -  you will find it with Allah"
[Al-Muzzammil:20]

But what concerns them is obtaining dollars. So I say: Uff to knowledge whose outcome is begging! This is why they have fallen, and Al-Islaah organisation is worse in deceit. Let no one think that we remain silent about the Al-Islaah organisation. We have, with all praise being to Allah, authored a treatise titled “The blameworthiness of begging” when we saw them running, not concerned except with collecting money, and then using it to fight the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ”.

He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:
“If Aqeel Al-Maqtari, Muhammad Al-Mahdi, or others come to you, and they said: “This is a scholar from the Yemeni scholars” do not host him, do not welcome him, and do not attend his lecture. He travels around for dollars...”. End of his speech from Tuhfat Al-Mujeeb.

He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:
“Money that contains humiliation to knowledge and the callers to Allah, or a call to Hizbiyyah or turns Masjids into places for begging, we are not in need of it.

Ya Allah how many big callers memorize verses that encourage charity and move from one Masjid to another:

(وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ)
"And whatever good you put forward for yourselves -  you will find it with Allah"
[Al-Muzzammil:20]

The Miskeen has turned from a caller to a beggar, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke the truth when he said: “Every nation has a trial, and the trial of my nation is wealth”. End of his speech from “The blameworthiness of Begging”.

This was the 'Iffah (abstinence) of our Shaykh Muqbil. Look at how his center in Dammaj was:

🚫من هم النُّصَيْرِيَّة الذين نصر الله أهل الإسلام عليهم اليوم في سوريا وشرد الله بطاغيتهم؟🚫

✏️قال شَيْخُ الْإِسْلَامِ تَقِيُّ الدِّينِ أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ تَيْمِيَّةَ رحمه الله تعالى:

فَإِنَّ النُّصَيْرِيَّةَ أَتْبَاعُ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ " مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نُصَيْرٍ " يَقُولُونَ فِي عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ نَظِيرَ مَا يَقُولُهُ النَّصَارَى فِي الْمَسِيحِ، كَذَلِكَ سَائِرُ الْغُلَاةِ فِي عَلِيٍّ، أَوْ فِي أَحَدٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ، أَوْ فِي الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيَّةِ بَنِي عُبَيْدٍ الْمُنْتَسِبِينَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، كَالْحَاكِمِ وَغَيْرِهِ. انتهى

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمُ الْمُسَمَّوْنَ بِالنُّصَيْرِيَّةِ هُمْ وَسَائِرُ أَصْنَافِ الْقَرَامِطَةِ الْبَاطِنِيَّةِ أَكْفَرُ مِنْ الْيَهُودِ وَالنَّصَارَى؛ بَلْ وَأَكْفَرُ مِنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَضَرَرُهُمْ عَلَى أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَعْظَمُ مِنْ ضَرَرِ الْكُفَّارِ الْمُحَارِبِينَ مِثْلُ كُفَّارِ التَّتَارِ وَالْفِرِنْجِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ؛ فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ يَتَظَاهَرُونَ عِنْدَ جُهَّالِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِالتَّشَيُّعِ، وَمُوَالَاةِ أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ، وَهُمْ فِي الْحَقِيقَةِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاَللَّهِ، وَلَا بِرَسُولِهِ وَلَا بِكِتَابِهِ، وَلَا بِأَمْرٍ وَلَا نَهْيٍ، وَلَا ثَوَابٍ وَلَا عِقَابٍ، وَلَا جَنَّةٍ وَلَا نَارٍ وَلَا بِأَحَدٍ مِنْ الْمُرْسَلِينَ قَبْلَ مُحَمَّدٍ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَلَا بِمِلَّةٍ مِنْ الْمِلَلِ السَّالِفَةِ بَلْ يَأْخُذُونَ كَلَامَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ الْمَعْرُوفِ عِنْدَ عُلَمَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَتَأَوَّلُونَهُ عَلَى أُمُورٍ يَفْتَرُونَهَا؛ يَدَّعُونَ أَنَّهَا عِلْمُ الْبَاطِنِ؛ مِنْ جِنْسِ مَا ذُكِرَ مِنْ السَّائِلِ، وَمَا غَيْرُ هَذَا الْجِنْسِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ حَدٌّ مَحْدُودٌ فِيمَا يَدَّعُونَهُ مِنْ الْإِلْحَادِ فِي أَسْمَاءِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَآيَاتِهِ، وَتَحْرِيفِ كَلَامِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَرَسُولِهِ عَنْ مَوَاضِعِهِ؛ إذْ مَقْصُودُهُمْ إنْكَارُ الْإِيمَانِ وَشَرَائِعِ الْإِسْلَامِ بِكُلِّ طَرِيقٍ مَعَ التَّظَاهُرِ بِأَنَّ لِهَذِهِ الْأُمُورِ حَقَائِقَ يَعْرِفُونَهَا مِنْ جِنْسِ مَا ذَكَرَ السَّائِلُ. انتهى

📚الفتاوى الكبرى لابن تيمية (3/ 505-506)

⚪قال تعالى: "إِنَّا لَنَنصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ" [غافر : 51]

⚪وقال تعالى: "لِلَّهِ الْأَمْرُ مِن قَبْلُ وَمِن بَعْدُ وَيَوْمَئِذٍ يَفْرَحُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ * بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ يَنصُرُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ * وَعْدَ اللَّهِ لَا يُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ"[الروم : 4-6]

⚪وقال تعالى: "قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ" [يونس : 58]

✏️قال الإمام ابن القيم رحمه الله في نونيته:

✨وَكَذَلِك الفَتَّاحُ مِنْ أَسْمَائِهِ ... وَالفَتْحُ فِي أَوْصَافِهِ أمْرَانِ

✨فَتْحٌ بِحُكْمٍ وَهْوَ شَرْعُ إلهنَا ... والفَتْحُ بالأَقْدَارِ فَتْحٌ ثَاني

✨والرَّبُّ فَتَّاحٌ بِذَيْنِ كِلَيْهِمَا ... عَدْلًا وإحْسَانًا مِنَ الرَّحْمنِ

⭐يَا رَبِّ وانصُرْ خَيْرَ حِزْبَيْنَا عَلَى ... حِزْبِ الضَّلَالِ وَعَسْكَرِ الشَّيْطَانِ

🌟فَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ الَّذِي هُوَ أَهْلُهُ كَمَا يَنْبَغِي لِكَرِيمِ وَجْهِهِ وَعِزِّ جَلَالِهِ.

💫 The Scholar's Independence Through Allah's Provision 💫

✏️ Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"If a scholar is granted wealth, he is supported in implementing his knowledge. But if he is made dependent on people, his knowledge perishes before his very eyes."

📚 I'lam Al-Muwaqqi'in

✨ May Allah have mercy on Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim and grant him abundant reward. His statement emphasizes the importance of a scholar’s independence from people in acquiring, practicing, and spreading knowledge. Relying on Allah’s provision empowers a scholar or preacher to disseminate and implement their knowledge freely, without constraints or feeling beholden to anyone. Conversely, dependence on others can diminish their influence, reduce their standing, and weaken their ability to convey the truth effectively.

⭐ We ask Allah to enrich our scholars, preachers, and students of knowledge with His bounty and make them a source of benefit to the Ummah in spreading goodness. Indeed, our Lord is Most Generous and the Bestower.
